As we enter the next chapter of SSD, I thought a little introduction and background into the new ownership would be a great way to get to know the behind-the-scenes magic maker. Here’s a quick-ish 20 questions interview!
What inspired you to become a wedding planner?
I’ve always been drawn to love stories, and after working as an event planner throughout the west coast, I knew I had the skill set to plan and execute an event, but my passion for creating meaningful and beautiful celebrations that reflect each couple’s journey is where my heart would pull me to.
What’s your favorite part of the wedding planning process?
My favorite part is the love story. I want to know all the details. How did you meet? Why did you fall in love with this person? What’s the weird thing that you do that is uniquely you? And do you have dogs? That’s always important.
I also really love the design phase, where we take a couple’s vision and bring it to life through colors, textures, and unique elements that make the day unforgettable.
How do you handle emotional or stressful moments with clients?
I take a calm, empathetic approach, focusing on listening to my clients’ concerns and helping them navigate the emotions by providing solutions and reassurance every step of the way. The key to being a great wedding planner is being the calm in the chaotic storm. Prior to the wedding day, every detail is discussed, secondary plans arranged, the entire vendor team in communication, and nothing left to chance. Wedding days are an emotional rollercoaster, your planner shouldn’t be.
What’s the most unique wedding you’ve ever planned?
I once planned a wedding in the middle of a forest, complete with a custom-built ceremony platform and chandeliers hanging from the trees—it was magical and entirely unique to the couple.
How do you make sure your clients feel heard and understood?
I prioritize communication, with regular check-ins, open channels for questions or concerns, and a genuine effort to connect with the couple on a personal level to ensure their vision is honored. I also offer “empathetic listening” sessions to my clients and their families. This is such a great way to blow off steam, let out the stress, or have a kind ear that knows what you’re going through listening, and more importantly, hearing what you have to say. Wedding planning is stressful, y’all. No denying it.
What values drive your company’s mission?
Kindness, inclusivity, and creativity are at the heart of everything we do. We believe every couple deserves a wedding that reflects their authentic selves, and we work tirelessly to achieve that. I wholeheartedly believe and keep to my core the reason I have the best job in the world. Two people found each other in this crazy world, opened their hearts and lives to each other, and want to celebrate the magic of dedicating their lives to each other. I think it’s such a beautiful thing that can get lost or forgotten in the excitement of the planning and the party.
Can you tell me about a time when you faced a major challenge on a wedding day and how you solved it?
During one wedding, a vendor was in a car accident and rushed to the hospital, unable to service the wedding. I immediately worked with my network to find a replacement within the hour, ensuring the event went on without a hitch, and the couple never knew.
How do you balance tradition and innovation in your designs?
I love blending timeless elements, like elegant florals or classic décor, with modern twists such as bold color palettes or interactive entertainment, creating a wedding that feels fresh but still honors tradition. Also, I LOVE a multi-day celebration so every cultural or religious aspect, or honestly your personality quirks, are given the space and attention that make your wedding perfect.
How do you work with couples who have different styles or preferences?
I see it as an exciting challenge! I find ways to merge both styles harmoniously, by incorporating elements from each partner’s vision to create a cohesive design that feels like “them.” At the end of the day, your wedding, from the engagement to the honeymoon, should be about YOU and every person in attendance is there because they are special to your life and are witnesses to the magic of two people committing their lives to each other forever and ever.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to couples planning their wedding?
Stay true to your vision. The day is about celebrating your love, and your wedding should reflect what’s meaningful to you as a couple, not just following trends or expectations.
How many years of experience do you have?
I’m in my 19th year in the wedding and event planning industry! Oof, that’s a long time! I started as an event planner and designer in Los Angeles, worked all over the west coast, then came home to St. Louis, started planning weddings, fell in love and married the best man of wedding #1, and never looked back. I have the best job in the world playing even the tiniest part in someone’s love story.
What sets your company apart from others?
Experience. I’ve managed catering companies, designed and opened venues, am a certified florist and certified life cycle celebrant performing love story wedding ceremonies as an officiant. I have a running joke of “I’ve done everything but take photos and bake cakes.” (but I will ALWAYS be available to test cake.) Through this knowledge, I know what each vendor needs to best execute their service to the client. We combine personalized service, a deep understanding of design, and extensive industry connections, ensuring each wedding comes to life exactly how it is envisioned.
Do you offer services beyond wedding planning?
Yes, we provide event design, ceremony officiating, destination wedding planning, and rehearsal dinner coordination, ensuring a comprehensive experience for our couples. I also offer empathetic listening sessions (open to everyone, not just SSD clients! this is great for mothers of the bride and groom too that need a kind ear to feel heard!) as well as event emcee services. What can I say, I love being on a stage.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love spending time outdoors, a great binge watch of rom-coms or 90 day fiance, hiking with my dogs, traveling, exploring nature, or diving into creative hobbies like dancing or pulling something out of my hobby graveyard, aka cabinet full of art supplies, games, and more.
Do you have any favorite books or podcasts?
I’m a big fan of personal development books, and I love podcasts about creativity, business growth, and occasionally a true crime story for fun! I’m currently falling down the romantic-fantasy-fairy book genre to break up binge listening to true crime podcasts. I have definitely listened to every single episode of Morbid by the true crime queens Alaina Urquhart and Ash Kelley.
How has your experience with ADHD influenced your approach to work and life?
ADHD (and therapy, yay!) has taught me to embrace creativity and flexibility, while also developing strategies for structure. It helps me think outside the box and connect more deeply with others. I think everyone is going through something personally that carries into their daily life, and being more receptive and perceptive to others gives me insight into not only them, but myself. I am so lucky to be inspired every day.
What’s a cause or issue you’re passionate about?
I’m passionate about social equity and animal welfare. I believe in making choices that are for the good of the community and supporting causes that protect our environment and animals. When everyone is accepted for who they are, and given the tools or opportunities that provide for an equitable life experience, the entirety of humanity can lift each other.
What’s one place you’ve always wanted to travel to, and why?
I’ve always dreamed of visiting Thailand! The mix of ancient traditions and modern innovation fascinates me, plus I’m drawn to the serene beauty of the countryside and temples. Every country I don’t tend to go on “relaxing” vacations. When I travel, I want to see EVERYTHING. The art, the food, the architecture, the daily life of people. Take me out of the tourist centers and show me what real life is like there.
What’s your go-to playlist?
Oooh, that’s tough. On any given day I could be listening to 90’s/early 2000’s hip hop, diva ballads, broadway hits… I’m all over the board. If I can’t sing all the words, give me something with a great beat. I love to dance and move my body creatively. After being a competitive dancer for almost 20 years, I know it’s a life long trait of mine that give me both a creative, physical and emotional outlet.
And finally, if you could live your life with one common mindset, what would that be?
If you’ve got a stack of wood beside you, build a longer table instead of taller fences. We’re all trying our best and the world is hard enough. Love each other and love yourself. So whenever the world feels too heavy to shoulder alone, I’m drawn to the song “Rainbow Connection” and the genuine heart of childish experiences. The phrase “The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me” feels so timeless and introspective. If I can live my life with compassion, kindness and a sprinkle of magic, it is a life well lived.
